Georgie Hutchins Wagner DeWitt, 92, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2022. Georgie was born October 17, 1929, in Atwell, Texas to George and Viola Hutchins, and later moved to Cross Plains, TX. She was the oldest of seven children.
Georgie married William “Bill” Wagner Jr. on November 7, 1948, and they welcomed their only child, Jan Ava on October 7, 1949. Bill, Georgie and Jan moved to Amarillo, TX in 1950, where Georgie and Jan had a very close relationship. They were able to see each other almost every day for Jan’s entire life. Jan and husband Donnie have three daughters, Shannon, Tifany and Brittany, and Georgie loved those girls dearly.
Georgie worked as a secretary for Furr Foods, where she was awarded Secretary of the Year. She was a proud member of the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce and served as President of Women’s Chamber in the 1960s. Georgie loved working in the community and served on many committees including Meals on Wheels. She was named Businesswoman of the Year by the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce in 1996, and the look of surprise on her face when they announced that she was the winner of that prestigious award was priceless. What a well-deserved award for such a wonderful person.
Georgie loved to shop with Jan and her granddaughters. Dillard’s and Beall’s employees knew Georgie on a first name basis. She had a lifetime subscription to Vogue magazine, and she loved fashion, clothes, and shoes. She was always buying something new for her family and was known to take Jan and the girls shopping day and night to find that perfect outfit, shoes, and accessories included.
Her strong Christian beliefs and unwavering love for the Lord brought joy to all those who knew her. Georgie’s smile brought light to any room and those who knew her will always remember that smile and laugh. It was contagious. She will be missed but is dancing in Heaven.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, George, and Viola Hutchins; one brother, Merlin; and William “Bill” Wagner Jr. She leaves behind her family who loved her: husband, Jerry DeWitt; daughter and husband, Donnie and Jan Price, granddaughters, Shannon Hetrick and husband Chad; Tifany Wyatt; Brittany Isom and husband Jeff; great grandchildren Taylor and Payton Hetrick; Ginelle Manning and husband Mike; Alana, Will and Madelyn Wyatt; and Jacob and Abby Isom; brothers, Vondal, and wife Joyce; Darvel and wife Mary; Alvin and wife Vondean; Elvin and wife Glenda, and one sister Barbara Vaught; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
