Obituary for Jean Alexander (Scott)

Martha Jean (Scott) Alexander was born on January 31,1925 to Cary Eugene Scott and Mary Lillian Starr Scott in Greensboro, NC. Soon after she and her family moved to Burlington, NC where she spent her formative years. She graduated from Montreat College High School in 1942 and attended Elon College.

During WW II she interrupted her education and became a Licensed Vocational Nurse working at the hospital at Camp Butner N.C. There she met and won the heart of James Alexander, a Texas boy, who was stationed there during the war. As the war was winding down, they married on October 4,1945 and immediately left for Texas. This was a completely new world for Jean to which she adapted and loved. Their union was blessed with two children, Mary Starr born in 1947 and James Doss III (Jim) in 1949.

James and Jean moved to Cross Plains in 1950 where they became an active part of the community. James coached and Jean utilized her nursing skills while working at the Rising Star Hospital for a number of years.
In 1960, the family moved to Clyde where Jean commenced her career in education. She went back to school graduating from Abilene Christian University in 1962 with a degree in Elementary Education. Jean taught at Clyde Elementary School for 17 years until returning to Cross Plains where she continued to teach until her retirement. Over that period, she touched the lives and had a positive influence on many children.

Jean was a faithful Christian and a member of the Cross Plains church of Christ. She was outgoing and never met a stranger. She loved the communities of Cross Plains and Clyde making numerous lifetime friends that she cherished. One of her greatest joys in her later years was her time spent at the Cross Plains Senior Citizens Center. She loved the staff, her fellow Sr. citizens and the activities associated with the center. It was an integral part of her last years.

Jean was known as Maw Maw to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed hearing about their experiences and keeping up with their activities.

The family would like to express their great appreciation to all of her care givers who helped her stay in her home over the past several years. A special heartfelt thanks goes to Cindy Clark who worked for Jean in some capacity for nearly 35 years.
