Richard loved the country and after raising his family in Round Rock/Austin for many years he moved to the Cross Plains area in 2004 where he and his wife Linda made a wonderful home on 66 acres called the Burns Nest. He received numerous other recognition and awards while at IBM such as the Systems Technology Division Presidents Award.

After retirement, Richard volunteered often with his wife Linda. From working at Special Olympic events to delivering for Meals on Wheels to helping at the Cross Plains Public Library. While he and Linda raised their two precious daughters, Richard coached in the girls Softball league for many years as well as was active with his two daughters in the YMCA Indian Princess Program. Once his grandson Casey was born, he was at every sporting event which were many as well as Boy scouts, camping, fishing and any other activity Casey was involved in. He enjoyed travelling with his family and visited 49 of the 50 states in the US as well as most of Europe. While he enjoyed working and traveling, he most enjoyed being out in the country with his horses, deer, wild turkeys, dogs and family.
