Alvin Floyd Hutchins, age 80 of Cross Plains, Texas passed away on Friday, December 8, 2023. Our most beloved dad, grandad, great grandad, brother, uncle, cousin and friend was caught up in the arms of his Heavenly Father. Alvin whose shirt said, “My favorite people call me Pops” was born on January 23, 1943, in Atwell, Texas.
Putting Alvin’s “Pop’s” life story on paper in a few short words is very difficult. He wore many hats. His kind and encouraging heart and his strong work ethic are perhaps his greatest legacies.
Alvin began working long before he was 18. At age 18 he joined the United States Army for 4 years. He began his lifelong career in the beef industry. He worked alongside his wife Vondean for over 40 years as the owner and operator of the Cross Plains Frozen Food Locker. He absolutely loved his beef, hog and deer customers. Pops always said, “It was a mutual blessing-he fed his customer’s families, and his customers fed his family. While still working at the locker he began his second career for the United States Postal Service. For over 30 years he delivered mail to his friends. He knew each one personally and didn’t want to retire because he wouldn’t get to see his friends on his daily mail routes. Over 70 years loving his customers-what an example, what a legacy!
Faithful follower, that is what Alvin Floyd Hutchins exemplified most. He was a member of the First Baptist Church for over 50 years. He served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and a committee member. Alvin loved the Lord, - if you knew him for even 5 minutes, you knew that about him. He would run, not walk to anyone in need he heard about and lend a helping hand. Say Amen, if you’ve been a witness to that!
Pops you made us better by what you had to say, “Love the Lord your God and Love your neighbor” is what you taught us to pray. Our love for you may you always know, Dear Pops we love you and we miss you so.
