Merillyn Aiken, 74, of Cross Plains, TX, passed away in Abilene on Wednesday, January 18, 2017.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, January 23, 2017 at Higginbotham Funeral Home Chapel in Cross Plains with Jeff Addison officiating. Burial will follow the service at the Pioneer Cemetery in Cross Plains, Texas. The family will have a time of visitation from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Sunday at Higginbotham Funeral Home, Cross Plains, TX.

Merillyn was born on March 18, 1942 in San Angelo, TX to the Late Cecil Merrill and Dorothy Louise Gray-Whiteley. She was raised by her grandparents, Late Lonnie and Ida Ringhoffer-Gray. She married the love of her life Frank B. Aiken on January 14, 2005 in Arlington, Texas who preceded her in death on January 17, 2015. Merillyn was a LVN for many years. She was known by her co-workers as MeraMare and was dearly loved by them and those she served. During her LVN career she worked in the following towns, Cross Plains, Rising Star, Cisco, Eastland and Ranger. She also believed that her children should be well Educated so she encouraged them to continue their education after graduating High School. Merillyn touched many lives through her lifetime and will be deeply missed by those who were blessed to be loved by her.


Merillyn is survived by her son, John Edward and wife, Mary Schaefer of Mexia; daughter, Mary Jo and husband, Manny DeLeon of Abilene; 6 grandchildren, Jonathon Schaefer and wife, Kaylynn of Liberty City; Kristina Sanchez and husband, Steve of Frisco; Charles Oscar Schaefer of Abilene; Alana Averitt of Abilene; Tessa Smith and husband, Tommy of Abilene; Sara Davis of Abilene; 10 great grandchildren, Luke, Rhiley, Kloey, and Jaxxon Schaefer; Julian Sanchez; Madison Averitt; Alivea Grace Werner; Desiree and Xavier Alaniz; Chloe Smith; sisters, Sandi Armes of Colville, WA; Flasha Merris of Spokan, WA; special nephew, Johnny Clay of Cross Plains.

Merillyn is preceded in death by great grandson, Miguel Alaniz.
