Richard Ames

Richard Caldwell Ames, 85, of Cross Plains, passed away Saturday, July 22, 2017 in Rising Star, TX.

A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, August 5, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Pioneer Cemetery.

Richard was born to Ethel May Sloat & Richard Caldwell Ames, Sr. on May 8, 1932 in their home between Putnam & Moran, Callahan County, TX. Raised in the oil fields Richard’s life was centered in the production and use of oil.

He received his B. S. Degree in Geology from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. His occupation took him to many areas in Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma, and New Mexico.

While working as a geologist in Bay City Richard met and married Mary Alice Jones. He was working in off-shore drilling. He and Mary Alice moved to Cross Plains and he worked with his father in the peanut fields, raising goats, traveling, and other occupations. Richard opened a pipe yard in Pioneer, TX. where he worked until his illness.

He loved music and poetry, playing cards, cross-word puzzles and making furniture from mesquite and oak wood.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son Jimmy Jones, and two sisters Esther McDaniel and Mary Moore.

He is survived by one daughter Theresa Henderson of Bay City, one brother Thomas Ames and two sisters Ethel Ames and Phyllis Harris all from Cross Plains, TX. He is also survived by six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Richard is dearly loved by all and will be sorely missed.
